University of Nebraska Medical Center

The University of Nebraska Medical Center is a public academic medical center, located on 42nd and Emile Street. UNMC is one of the largest medical centers in the area. There are many facilities in an area that expands from 40th and Leavenworth to 35th and up to Dodge Street. The University also has plans to expand their facilities in order to accommodate more students in both their academic work and in research. UNMC currently enrolls 2,700 students and the president is Harold Maurer.

A private medical college was established in Omaha in 1880. Renamed the Omaha Medical College the following year, it became part of the University of Nebraska system in 1902. A university hospital opened in 1917.
In 2003, the UNMC hospital merged with the nearby hospital operated by Clarkson College to become The Nebraska Medical Center.
